The Stream Declares The Character Of The Fountain

My first offense is often forgetting God. If I exclude Him from my thoughts I will also exclude Him from my words and actions. When I forget Him I forget to ask what His will is. I believe that excluding God from my thoughts is a bad offense for everyone because it leads to many other offenses. I have painfully learned and relearned that it is best to include Him in my thoughts as much and as often as possible.

Romans 1:28-31 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

Notice that the first of the evils listed in the passage is that they did not like to retain God in their knowledge. I believe the first offense on the list is also the worst offense. It caused God to give them over to many other offenses. We cannot know their thoughts but their speech, interests and actions give them away. If they have no interest in God they will be involved in a litany of evils. The reverse is true as well. If individuals are involved in the evils listed in the passage, they will not want to think about God.

When individuals are guilty of that first and worst offense and the others, it is unwise to expect spiritually beneficial things from them. When people don’t want to think about God, speak about God or hear about Him they should not be trusted to do or say anything that is true and good and wise. They should not be imitated or obeyed. They will not be good companions but they should be loved, prayed for and witnessed to.
